From Our Clients

“I’d been diagnosed with PTSD, depression, and anxiety from childhood. I’ve mostly struggled with feeling disconnected from myself and those around me, broken and helpless. I’d get wildly overwhelmed in life and shut most people out because that was the only pattern I’d ever learned.

During Co-regulating Touch work, my therapist invited me to speak or stay silent, and more importantly, to just let things flow. She invited me to listen to my body and share if I wanted.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Somatic therapy for PTSD involves enlisting the body as an ally in the healing process. Trauma is less about what happened and more about how you responded to the event emotionally and how your body was negatively impacted. OUr clinicians are trained in leading trauma-resolution, somatic modalities such as Somatic Experiencing®, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, S.A.F.E. EMDR, and Coregulating Touch.

Somatic therapy helps by addressing the physical and emotional impact of trauma stored in the body, promoting nervous system regulation, and facilitating the release of traumatic stress.

Most people believe that in order to heal from a traumatic event, that you have to talk about what happened in detail. Not so, we actually discourage this until we know how your nervous system functions in response to the traumatic event.  Often, talking about the event only re-traumatizes the client and further entrenches maladaptive somatic patterns and patterns of coping that keep people stuck.

In a somatic therapy session, we focus more on increasing a client’s capacity to deal with uncomfortable bodily experiences through resourcing skills, grounding techniques and guided somatic awareness. We always work at the pace of the client’s nervous system capacity in order to support integration and healing.

The timeline for seeing results can vary based on individual circumstances and the severity of PTSD. Some clients may notice improvements after a few sessions, while others may require more extended therapy.

What we have seen is that clients who struggle with PTSD often have early and adverse childhood experiences that predispose them to developing symptoms of PTSD due to early patterns of a dysregulated nervous system.

Yes, somatic therapy can be effectively combined with other treatments for PTSD, such as psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy, EMDR, and medication, to provide a comprehensive approach to healing. We encourage our clients to have more than one practitioner and utilize adjunctive healing modalities such as acupuncture, functional medicine, trauma-informed massage and nutritional support.

Techniques used in somatic therapy for PTSD may include Somatic Experiencing®®, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, Co-Regulating Touch, and Safe and S.A.F.E. EMDR, all aimed at helping clients process trauma and heal their nervous system.

Excellent questions.  No, you won’t have to re-tell traumatic events if you don’t want to.  As a matter of fact, while we care about what happened to you, we care more about protecting your nervous system than we do hearing about the details of the hard stuff.  Most of the time, we encourage clients NOT to tell us everything that happened in one sitting, especially during our first session together because we know that when you talk about the hard stuff, your body re-lives those events in the present time.

What we do instead of asking our clients to tell us about their trauma are things like slowing down the pace of the re-telling, pausing to practice awareness and grounding as needed and focusing on certain parts of the narrative instead of the whole thing at one time.  In this way, we protect our clients from getting too hijacked or overwhelmed.  We have worked with clients in successfully resolving their trauma without them ever having told the whole story.

Trauma isn’t just about the overwhelming event that happened to you.  Trauma is also about the changes in your brain and nervous system that occurred as a result.

Early/developmental trauma actually changes the brain structure and impedes the optimal growth of the brain and nervous system.  The ACEs study completed in 2013, shows a correlation between childhood trauma and greater risk for lifelong health problems.

Shock trauma can hijack your adrenal system, the system that pumps adrenaline and cortisol into your body, such that too much or too little of these important hormones are available for daily functioning.

Because trauma of any form changes the functioning of your body, it only makes sense that your body needs to be a part of the healing process.
